Substitutions

When I say substitutions, I'm not talking about baking substitutions.  I am talking about DIET substitutions.  Look at your normal haul after a shopping trip. What did you buy?  What is your family accustomed to eating?  What are you used to having around the house?

Now... the big question is:  What can you substitute for certain things to improve your overall health?

Here are some of the substitutions that my family has made.

Instead of:

White Bread   --->   Whole Wheat Bread
Bagged Iceberg Lettuce   --->   Romaine Lettuce
Packaged Snack food   --->   Fresh or Dried Fruit and Nuts
Sugared Cereal   --->  Lightly sugared cereals  (such as Honey Nut Cheerios)
2% milk   --->  Skim Milk

Now, some people may look at the right side of this list and think that we STILL aren't eating very healthy.  I suppose that might be true compared to some people.  But the important thing to me and my family is that we are eating far better than we did before. It really is all relative.

In addition to the above list, generally speaking, anything that you can make yourself is going to be better than something bought pre-made and pre-packaged, full of preservatives and who-knows-what.  So another list I have here is an example of a few things that I can easily (and sometimes with a little more effort) make or assemble myself from fresh ingredients.

Guacamole
Hummus
Bread
Yogurt
Oatmeal
